Madison Cyber Labs is one step closer to final approval with Monday afternoon's OK by the South Dakota Board of Regents' Dakota State University Building Committee. The four-member committee was unanimous in its approval of the design plan for the approximately 40,000-square-foot building. The next step in the process will be approval by the Board of Regents when it meets at DSU Oct. 3-5. After the Regents' approval, the plan must receive the OK of the Legislature and Gov. Dennis Daugaard. The committee's approval came from DSU President Jose-Marie Griffiths, Regent Randy Scheafer, Scott Bollinger of the state Bureau of Administration and Monte Kramer, vice president of finance and administration for the Regents. On the teleconference, Kramer took the place of Regents Executive Director Michael Rush. Stacy Krusemark, DSU vice president for business and administrative services, told the committee about the plans for the building. The new building will be built on the site of Lowry Hall, which will be torn down. Lowry is located on the southwest corner of campus. The $18 million facility will have two sections, Krusemark said. The facade of the one-story western portion will be dominated by glass. Krusemark explained that general research will be taking place in that portion of the building. The two-story eastern portion would be closed off from view as plans call for the construction of sensitive compartmented information facilities. The SCIFs will provide secured access to the cutting-edge technologies needed for classified government and industrial research. Schaefer asked how it would be possible to ensure that the facility meets the needs of government entities like the National Security Agency. Krusemark said a certifying agency will be on site during construction to make sure that the standards are met. More information about the design plan can be found on the Regents' website at https://www.sdbor.edu/the-board/committees/building-dsu/Pages/default.aspx.
